There are many different types of skates, all of which are bought and used for different purposes, for instance acrobatic skating, skate dancing, speed skating, hockey skating, just to name but a few. All these uses of skates can be majorly categorized as either aggressive or recreational skating.
However, despite the differences, there are some characteristics that are common for all skates, for example existence of a braking mechanism in some way or the other. This post gives you some of the features to look out for before buying roller skates.
Knowing the Types and Styles of Roller Skates
The first thing that you should understand is that roller skates usually come in many styles, and this in essence forms the basis for the different ways of roller skating. The skates can either be quad or inline. Sometimes people usually confuse these skates with quad skates and as such end up buying the wrong pair. Well, generally, you should understand that while all quad skates fall under the roller skates category, the reverse is not always the case.
The complete set of roller skates includes a boot/shoe made having a structural plate on its base. On the plate, there are holes which are rigid enough to offer good support the axle and the attached wheels. Some skates have a wheel and axle arrangement that resembles that of a car while others have one that resemble that of a motorcycle.
Choose a design and style of skates that fits your intended use. The design and style will determine such things like braking and turning while skating.
The Issue of Quality
As with many other products, the higher the price tag for these skates, the better their quality. When looking at the quality of the skates, considers such features as the fit, the level of shock absorption, the quality of bearings and wheels and the responsiveness of the skates. On average, a high quality pair of skates would cost you approximately $200. However, one can still land lucrative deals that are cheaper than this.
Comfort of Boots
Closely related to the quality of skates is the level of comfort of the boots. The kind of fit that you choose should also have an allowance for forward flexing at the ankle so that you don’t compromise on your balance when skating. The boot can either be soft or semi-soft, and all these have different price tags. The frame supports and joins the boot to the wheels.
In short, choose skates that have very comfortable boots, are flexible and allow enough flow of air to your feet as well as giving you enough balance. For this reason, you will realize that most boots nowadays have all the buckle closures, laces as well as straps.
Wheel Size
Large wheels are ideal for fast skating though these are not as stable as the smaller wheels. The sizes of wheels for many skates range between 80mm and 90mm. For beginners, it is advisable to buy skates with soft wheels as these have better shock absorption and offer a firm grip on rough surfaces.
Buying skates can be quite tricky especially for people who are new to skating. However, equipped with the right information and facts, you can still land a good deal on either roller skates or quad skates of your preference.
