Reading is one of the most important life skills that you can possibly teach your child, but many parents find that their children aren’t interested in reading as a hobby. This could seriously limit their literacy though, so getting your child into reading from an early age is advisable. Reading doesn’t come easy for some children though, so you may need to encourage them that bit more if you want them to succeed.

Reading for pleasure is a hobby that your child will grow up with, and once they are adults they will almost certainly find that it is still with them. Reading books can provide your child with additional learning as well as being enjoyable for them, which is why so many parents are keen to encourage it.

If you are struggling to find ways to get your child to enjoy reading, here are a few tips:

1) Read with them
Reading with your child will help to grab their attention and make them interested in books. You will probably already read your child to sleep, but allowing for more reading time during the day is a great idea. Allow them to choose the books they want you to read and make sure they are sat by your side or can at least follow the words as you read them.

2) Give books as presents
You don’t just have to wait until Christmas or their birthday before giving your child presents – you can find lots of cheap children’s books online that you can offer them to read on their own. Try not to make your child feel as though they are being forced to read – simply allow them to take their time in becoming interested in the books.

3) Begin a series with them
One of the best ways to get children into books is to begin reading a book series with them. Good examples would be Harry Potter, the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, His Dark Materials, A Series of Unfortunate Events and the Horrible Histories books. You can read the first few together and then, when you know you have their attention, can suggest they read them on their own. If you child is definitely hooked on the storyline they will be more than willing to start reading on their own for fun, but if you think they might need some assistance you can continue reading to them until they are ready.

You should make sure you have a good selection of children's books in your home to encourage your child to read, so buy books online now.
