The cables needed to connect your HDTV to various devices depend on the kinds of outputs these devices have. Incoming signals from these devices to the television are broken up into audio (what you can hear through the speakers) and video (what you can see on the screen). The inputs on the back of a HDTV vary in quality and their use depends on how new the devices are that will be plugged into it. The newer the DVD player or cable box, the better outputs it will generally have. Most HDTVs created after 2006 have an HDMI input, in which a HDMI cable carries a HD signal from an HD source. This source is usually either a cable box or DVD player. When using a Blu-Ray player, use of the HDMI cable is required for maximum picture quality. You want to always use an HDMI cable if at all possible because they provide the very best quality picture for you. There are HDMI cables which can run more signal per second and these provide the very best quality, for a little more money, but it's worth it.Your HDTV may have something that needs to be connected to it that doesn't have HDMI capability, if that's true you'll be using a component cable. The HDTV will have some color coded inputs that are blue, green and red, the cable will have corresponding colored connector plugs. Also there will be a red and white colored inputs for sound which is a different cable, so in total there will be five cables to connect.Along with the higher quality provided by the HDMI cable, it eliminates all those other five cables which makes for a neater setup. But if you have neither the HDMI or the component outputs on your DVD or cable box then you'll see inputs that are red, white and yellow. Purchase a composite cable and it's connectors will have corresponding colors on each end for easy match up. The red and white carries the sound, and the yellow handles the picture. Look to determine if there is a S video output on the components, if so acquire that cable also, it will make the video higher quality. There are a lot of home theater systems using the HDMI cable these days.
