Siomai (Si-yo-may) , is a popular Chinese dim sum that truly captivates Filipino’s taste, In China it is known as Shu-mai which literally means to cook and sell. While it is originally a Chinese food recipe, it becomes a favorite Filipino recipe for merienda or as a viand as well. Siomai was usually used as one of main meat ingredient for another popular Chinese food known as wanton noodle soup. Before, siomai is just being offered in some of reputable Chinese restaurant in the Philippines but now a day’s siomai has become a popular food product which can be always found in every major street in the Philippines. A lots of people are selling siomai from a kiosk in major supermarket in Philippines to a vendor selling siomai using improvise tricycle cart. Siomai is one of the most favorite foods in our home, I always prepare siomai for my kid’s school lunch as you could always prepare a lots for immediate use. Anyway, here is how I prepare siomai that I know that you will surely like.
1 kg of ground pork
¼ kg of ground beef
2-3 pcs onion, minced
1 carrots, peeled and minced
1 singkamas ( jicama or Mexican turnip)
¼ tbsp ground pepper corn
250 grams shrimp, minced
Wanton wrapper (siomai wrapper)
Salt ¼ tbsp
Minced Spring onion
Procedure For Cooking:
In a mixing bowl, mix all of the ingredient , scoop one tablespoon of the mixture into each wrapper, fold and seal. Mean while boil 2-3 cups of water using a steamer, upon boiling brush steamer with cooking oil preventing siomai wrapper sticking on metal surface. Arrange wrapped mixture in the steamer and let it stand for 25-30 minute or until siomai is done.
Chili Sauce Ingredients:
100 gram of minced garlic
200 gram minced onion
250 gram of siling labuyo (minced using a blender)
¼ cup of butter
2-3 tbsp cooking oil
Procedure for Preparation:
In a pan, heat cooking oil and butter , sauté garlic until it start to change in color. Add onion until it turns into golden brown. Add minced siling libido and cook to simmer for several minute. Let it cool and refrigerate, Chilli sauce is easy to spoil, in order to increase its shelves live you could always add potassium sorbate (Optional) as a preservatives, just follow the manufacturer recommendation to achieve desired result.
Siomai is usually served as an appetizer while drinking alcoholic beverages , it is also served as a viand or for mid meal snack with a chili sauce as a dipping. It can be also included with your favorite noodle soup to add extra flavor as well. Enjoy.
