How to play the Zombie Soccer games in iPhone 4

The entire planet is glued to the World Cup, making it a perfect time to take advantage of soccer fever. But Chillingo isn't going the simulation route with its new iPhone soccer game. Instead, Pro Zombie Soccer is a ridiculous over-the-top castle defender, where you keep wave after wave of the undead at bay with perfect kicks from a magical soccer ball. And once you have scored enough killer shots, you get access to some pretty insane power-ups, like a satellite that roasts every zombie on-screen from low orbit.

Pro Zombie Soccer can almost be played with just one hand. You slide a button up and down the left side of the screen to aim your kick. The longer you hold down the button, the more powerful the shot. When you release the button, you automatically kick. If you strike a target, the ball immediately returns. If you miss, though, it bounces around and leaves you vulnerable for a few seconds. In later stages, those few seconds are deadly. Some enemies are pretty tough and require powered-up shots to effectively take them out.

My favorite moments, though, are when the screen is almost full of zombies and just when you are about to be overwhelmed, you get enough juice to use a powered-up shot. The satellite is a great choice, but the slice ball that cuts through every zombie in its path before returning to you just fills the screen with blood. It's a goofy sight – made even better by Pro Zombie Soccer's excellent cartoon style – that you can only find in a videogame. As serious as folks take the World Cup, it's good to have a little soccer action that's a riot without being an actual riot.
