How often do we take our environment for granted? Or at least, some of us just pay attention to our immediate surroundings and are not much concerned with what goes on outside the boundary. The problem is this, events that occur miles away can create an unpleasant situation where we live. For instance, the activities of industrialized nations are having a disastrous effect on Polar Regions. So isn’t it wise for all of us to take an interest in nature conservation?

Beware of hazardous waste- Factories and laboratories are the main culprits here, but even individual homes can contribute to this problem. We need to think about the chemicals we use for household purposes (bleach, insecticides, pesticides, detergents) and take care about how we dispose them. If you are working in a factory or a laboratory, you have a responsibility towards the environment. Sometimes, there is no easy way to dispose of these harmful agents, but a little inconvenience is nothing compared to the risks involved.

Protect the air you breathe- Sounds quite complicated but it’s not really. Burning fuel pollutes the air as we all know so what you have to do is keep this to a minimum. Don’t use a car when you can walk or cycle. Taking public transportation also brings down emission levels. Chicago has set a standard by becoming a bicycle friendly state. Its infrastructure supports cyclists. If you do use your car, make sure it’s fuel efficient and that it doesn’t emit a trail of carbon monoxide when you drive. Not everyone can afford expensive hybrid cars after all.

Trade in old machines- Ever heard of those offers where you can trade in your TV or the television for a brand new one? Maybe it’s a gimmick or maybe it will actually make a difference to the environment. Old equipment tend to take up more energy. So next time you hear of buy-back events, don’t dismiss it as a foolish notion.

Recycle- This is the guiding light of nature conservation. Not all of what we consume can be recycled but plastics are a good place to start. Plastic bags have become a real nuisance to the environment, so don’t use once and toss aside. Reuse and reuse. Avoid unnecessary packaging. Take a bag with you when you go shopping so that you don’t have to depend on plastic bags offered by the shops.

Put litter in its place- Our account won’t be complete if we don’t mention this point. Now there are certain garbage disposal systems in place so give your fullest cooperation and sort your garbage.

Grow trees – They absorb harmful gases and chemicals such as formaldehyde from the atmosphere and they also give back in terms of moisture. Did you know plants help to cure sick building syndrome by improving the air quality in closed quarters?
