Basic Setup
Many times, the set up for the audio or video equipment has not been completed properly, resulting in a lack of video and audio or just a lack of audio, as is usually the case. To fix this is very easy to do. While MSN/Windows Live Messenger is open, click "Tools" then "Menu" then "Audio & Video Setup" then select the type of speakers and headphones you are using from the drop-down menu. You must make sure that the word "None" is not selected. Then choose the microphone you are using from the correct drop down menu in the same window. This is not necessary if your headphones have a microphone built in. Then select the webcam you are using from the appropriate drop-down menu if you are using one. Then click "Finish." Audio and video should both work now. If they do not, proceed to the next possible solution.
Broadband Problems
One major player in the problem with the audio in Windows Live/MSN is the use of broadband routers. The routers are what connect a computer to the Internet and what makes PCs able to share the connection as well. The problem is when a broadband router is used; it makes the PC "hide" behind it, giving it an IP address that only the computers on the local network can read. Meaning only other PCs connected to the router can talk to each other. So if two people are trying to have an audio conversation with MSN and both are behind routers, they will need to disable the firewall by clicking "Start" then "Control Panel" then "Security" then click on the Firewall button to disable it. This applies to Windows XP. For a solution in Windows Vista, click "Start" then "Control Panel" then "Security" then "Windows Firewall" then "Change Settings" then click the tab labeled "Advanced" when the window appears. Then uncheck the network connection for which you want to disable the firewall.
Distorted Sound
Another problem with MSN/Windows Live Messenger is the sound cuts out. This is a known problem with versions 7, 8.0, 8.1 Beta and 8.1. Usually, video will work fine, but the built-in microphone will distort sound, not transmit sound, or you will hear static. The recommended fix is to contact Help.Live.com for support. The instructions they give depend on which version of messenger you have and what platform or operating system you are using.
