The point of using merchant heroes is to trade with other countries, in the kingdom mode you can click on view territories (right above the quest button), then a map will show up when you click on the different kingdoms what you can trade.

Then you can trade with those countries and make money!

You may feel confused when those merchant heroes keep standing outside but not go into their homes. Actually that is not a bug, the stalls outside the house are part of the house, click the "view upstairs" button, and it'll show your bed!
