Archaeologists claim that thesettlements on Castle Rock, overlooking at the center ofEdinburgh in the UK , had existed three thousand years ago. And it isnot surprising: the monolith of 133 meters of volcanicorigin with three steep slopes is a great natural fortification, upto which one could climb only from one side – from east. The firststone walls were raised already in the first century, andin the twelfth one Scottish kings moved their residence here. NowCastle Rock is connected with the city by the main street ofEdinburgh - Royal Mile in the UK . There are several museums in the castle. These are National WarMuseum of Scotland in the UK, twoold prisons, converted into touristic objects, as well as Museum ofthe Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. Butthe most interesting building of the castle usually remainsunnoticed. This is an unremarkable low building in the north of theyard - St Margaret's Chapel. Historians suppose it was built byorder of of King David I (approx. 1080-1153) inmemory of his mother, who was also later canonized in the UK.However, it is possible that the chapel was just a part of a largerstructure, about what the noticeable difference in the technique oflaying of some walls sections indirectly witnesses. Only in 1845 inthe UK, researchers discovered with surprise that this small storageroom is the oldest one from the surviving buildings not only of thecast le but the whole of Edinburgh.
