For homeowners, one of the biggest costs that they have to deal with is heating bills. Heating costs can be quite high today whether you run on electricity or gas. However, there are several ways in which you can deal with the situation and try to increase the efficiency of your gas central heating system.
Retaining Heat
One of the best ways to reduce your energy consumption is by reducing the temperature setting by a few degrees. This will allow you to save cost. Retaining heat is also a good way to decrease the usage of your gas central heating system. Your home should be well insulated to retain heat. When you keep the system running at a high temperature for several hours, the energy consumption will definitely be increased. Once your home is well heated, reducing the temperatures by a few degrees for some time can be a very effective way to reduce the heating bill while still maintaining warmth in your home.
Shut Off Heat in Rooms You Don’t Use
To improve the efficiency of your gas central heating, you should also shut off the heat in rooms like the dining room, study or any other that you tend to rarely use. You should either shut off the heat completely or set it on the lowest temperature. If it is not possible for you to change the radiator setting then you should contact the local engineer to replace the valves with ones that control temperature. This marginally small expensive can help you save a lot on your heating bills in the future.
Keep the System Clean
Another very important factor that can affect the efficiency of your gas central heating system is its internal states. Like most other types of home appliances, these systems are the most effective when they are used for a few years. However, a couple of years’ build up inside the system’s workings can reduce its efficiency dramatically. According to an independent research, the efficiency of the system can be reduced by 15% if it is dirty. If your system is quite old, its efficiency may be greatly reduce because of the internal build up.
Therefore, it is important to ask a local heat engineer to provide the whole system a good clean up and a flush the next time you system is to receive a service. If you live in a part of the country where you get hard water then there would be more chances of blockages because of limescale, rust fragments that may get stuck inside your pipe works. It is important to treat these blockages at the earliest since they can damage the pipe work, the radiators, the pumps and even the boiler itself.
Once the system has been flushed out and the debris has been removed it can also be treated to ensure that the gas central heating system remains clean and avoids building up debris any time soon.
