When I first moved back to Michigan from New York City I wasn't very thrilled with the idea. You see I had met some business associates early on that gave me some stern advice. They mentioned that many of Michigan's business community had a "thing" about work. This woman informed me about – “The Ideal Michigan Dream”. Apparently, it was considered OK and even looked up highly upon if one committed fraud against the auto industry with work injury claims. At this point the employee could take their money and quit their job and start a little lawn company or a house painting business. I laughed at this idea because to me it sounded ridiculous. Then I realized she wasn't smiling and was dead serious. Still, I didn’t believe it. The idea sounded really far fetch to me. After a while I started to run into these types of people everywhere I went. And if it wasn't that I was meeting toe to toe with mortgage fraud, real estate hucksters, MLM junkies, non-profit scammers, phony Christian fund raising groups and that became my real Michigan experience. It became apparent to me that all of these people had a really poor work ethic. That was the one common trait among all of them. That turned me off to the State of Michigan. THE BIG HAND Everyone I met in business groups had some sort of angle on the "economy". Many of them wanted grants, (which is understandable to an extent) and many of them wanted a non-profit status. Keep in mind that as I met with these individuals they seemed to lack real world experience in business. I had worked in corporate America I have seen a lot of jobs up close and there was a serious shift in integrity. Seeing that contrast up close was dramatic after living so long in Chicago and New York City. It became apparent to me that these people felt that the State owed them something. Michigan is in the shape of a hand too so I began to coincide that with "Hand Out". Everybody expected some sort of hand out or free ride. It sickened me to see my home State of Michigan fall apart at the seams like this. Many groups had a version of this. Many people expected to be given something. Frank Bluestein and MyFoxDetroit When the big news case of Frank Bluestein first broke a few years ago it was shocking. But then the real enemy and the brains behind this whole debacle turned out to be Ed May. That did not stop Rob Wolcheck from getting his tongue tied in his own facts and spewing out complete nonsense. Among the jumbled facts he falsely reported to millions of Detroit viewers that Frank Bluestein liked to be called, "Frankie Blue" which is complete jibberish. Frank Bluestein is not the enemy in this controversial inquest. I realize that Ed May is a criminal and may be beyond redemption. But the real enemy of this entire story are the citizens of Michigan themselves. I have never come across so many people in one spot with such a miserable agenda to "getting rich" in my entire life. I find living with them to be exhausting, time wasting, and utterly mind numbing. To their defense there are many hard working citizens of Michigan and I find some good people from time to time. But on the whole, this idea of one man committing fraud to so many people is absurd. MICHIGAN CULTURE IS MLM You have to be part of a group. You have to be a certain race to get the "goodies". Another way to look at it is you have to belong to a certain religion. This is really how Michigan is in the grand scheme of things. I have found that religion to be a big stickler in Michigan. If you are not of the right side of the fence you are pretty much stuck in a rut. I have seen business groups conduct themselves this way and it gets petty. Personal integrity gets pushed aside and you have to be part of a group. It doesn’t matter if you are good at what you do. You have to have the right seal of approval on your head to be considered, “important”. The problem with this type of thinking is that it is dangerous. Take a good look at Michigan. It is seriously divided. It has a plethora of problems. Take a look at Chicago. It has a lot of problem too but it also has an incredible municipal infrastructure to keep the city running right. You can’t just park your car anywhere. You have to have a permit. That permit money helps pay for street cleaners and more police. It is run really tight. We lack that sort of tight planning in Detroit. We cannot even keep our police and fire departments staffed. There are a lot of politics and policies that do not work in conjunction with this dysfunctional work ethic. I have survived this rocky economic climate by refusing to be classified. I do not need anyone’s approval to feel solid. And I am certainly not going to blame someone else for my finances. If Frank Bluestein had not come along there would be someone else selling tickets to Bermuda, Tax Free Vacations Zones and even Heaven itself. The line would be miles long with hungry, anxious, greedy Michigan people with cash in hand waiting to buy them. That is the real scandal of this "fraud allegation". Michigan people are committing fraud against themselves and their children by engaging in this ongoing thought of "The State Owes Me Something" mentality. Nobody owes you anything. I certainly do not owe you anything and I don't expect anything from any of you. I create my own luck. Good or bad. So what happened to the investors of Ed May and Frank Bluestein is happening all over again with Michigan’s dreadful mortgage fraud scenario, (no, Frank and Ed had nothing to do with that). We are now seeing husband and wife real estate teams march straight off to prison to the tune of 7 years. Many of these real estate geniuses got their start in Birmingham, Michigan from a very high profile real estate gurus. I sit back and watch it all unfold. I do not partake in any of it. I find it interesting. I find it sad. But that is the State I live in.
