Omega is a part of Greek alphabet system where it is the 24th and last alphabet of the system. As far as Greek numeric system is concerned, it values to 800 and the word omega literally means the great o as mega means great. In biochemistry Omega 3 is considered as a fatty acid which is unsaturated in nature and has a carbon- carbon bond. Omega 3 fatty acids have been known to biologists since 1930s but knowledge regarding their role in health benefits has dawned upon us in the recent past only. The health benefits of omega 3 fatty acid were known only in 1970s by a group of researchers studying the Greenland Inuit Tribe. Inuit are basically a group of people who are culturally similar to those who inhabit the Arctic regions of the United States of America, Canada, Denmark and Russia.

There are three types of omega 3 acids namely alpha linoleic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) which are useful for human body and can be easily included in our diet by the choice of food we consume. The best source of omega 3 fatty acids is fish oil obtained from oily fish like tuna and sardine. However it should be kept in mind that not all types of fish oil are equally digestable. Another important point to be mentioned here is that though omega 3 fatty acid can be procured from fish, fish themselves do not produce it but it is obtained from algae and plankton which comprise a major part of their diet. Another good source of omega 3 fatty acid is flax seeds followed by walnuts, cauliflowers and cabbage. Omega 3 can also be found in spinach, soyabean, broccoli, brussel sprouts and tofu as well as pumpkin seeds. Eggs obtained from chicken which are fed on a diet of greens and insects are very rich in ALA type of omega 3 fatty acid compared to chicken that are made to consume corns or soybeans.

Omega 3 is beneficial to human beings as they let proper nutrients to enter cells, the basic unit our bodies are made up of. They also help in removing waste products and things which are not required from our cells. Omega 3 helps in fighting depression, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, bipolar disorders, joint pain, high blood pressure as well as obesity along with helping in the reduction of inflammation and maintain the fluidity of cell membranes. Therefore omega 3 fatty acids are very essential to the well -being of our health and food items which include omega 3 fatty acids should be encouraged in our diet.
