Increase brain power and prevent senile dementia with Vinpocetine

Vinpocetine is a semi-synthetic substance derived from the substance vincamine present naturally in the leaves of the periwinkle plant. Though the substance is used as a prescription drug in Europe and Japan for the treatment of many cerebrovascular and other such disorders, it is widely used as an over the counter supplement for increase brain power, improving memory, and concentration in United States and other countries.
Vinpocetine has been shown to increasing brain blood flow to the brain by dilating the blood vessels and crossing the brain blood barrier thereby increasing blood circulation to the brain and making the brain utilize oxygen in optimum way to prevent senile dementia and other such disorders relating to brain ageing and brain damage. The medicine has anti oxidant properties making it a potent anti ageing brain supplement.
Thus Vinpocetine has a neuroprotective effect which makes it a popular drug of choice among physicians for senile dementia and other such diseases. Due to its anti inflammatory properties Vinpocetine has also been used to treat diseases such as Azhiemer’s and Parkinson’s disease which involve inflammation of the brain cells and their rapid decline and death.
However, Vinpocetine has a brain power increasing effect when taken by otherwise healthy individuals to boost brain function and performance. Vinpocetine by increasing blood circulation boosts memory, improves concentration, betters eyesight, sharpens focus, improve hearing, quickens thought process and enhance overall brain function to make you perform better at work, studies and other day to day activities.
However care must be taken while taking this substance either as a medicine or as a supplement as Vinpocetine though otherwise safe can interfere with the effect of certain medicines especially the blood thinning medication and herbs such as aspirin, warfarin, Plavix (clopidogrel), Ticlid (ticlopidine), (Trental) pentoxifylline, vitamin E, garlic and ginkgo biloba.
One should always start with a lower dose and gradually build up to a higher recommended dose when the body becomes accustomed to the drug so as to prevent any complication or adverse effects. Some of the few mild side effects associated with this drug include headache, nausea, stomach upset, depression, wild mood swings, insomnia, flushing and dry mouth.
The drug can also result in temporary dip in blood pressure or hypotension among some individuals which can cause or increase the feelings of dizziness and nausea. People with hypotension, liver and kidney disease are therefore advised against taking this drug from over the counter. Supervision of a medical professional is always advisable before taking Vinpocetine.
