A web directory and a search engine are two different things which work hand in hand on a basic principle. A search engine is graphically easy to use customer orientated page with a text box which makes it easy for the users to search for what they want. Whereas the directories are the back end forums which make sure that what the users search on the search engine is searched. A common person is not supposed to know that how a web directory works but still are highly dependent on these directories as these are the key components which make these search engine work according the needs of the users and the website owners.

Now the main issue is that how these engines and directories work. The directories are a list of the URLs arranged respectively according to the keywords, tags and category. Such a method is implied because that these forums contain thousands of the URLs so if a user had to search them manually then it would become a very neck breaking task. The major issue is why bother with such a hassle if we have the modern technology. The answer is if a URL is not there in the directory then it won’t be searched online. The need to search online is there because the most the common internet users don’t know the exact addresses the websites they had visited in past or want to visit. So what person does in such situation is that he or she types the desired idea in the text box, so the search engine searches for the key words mentioned in the idea and compares with its directory, finally it displays the list of websites which match the keywords entered in the text box.

The complexity in the process is to make sure that each URL is listed with the respective key words, this where the human interference comes in. Human edited directory is maintained by human being as a computer is unable to ensure the URL given is relevant to the category and the key word mentioned against it. It would be useless for a person to search for something and get something else in return so as result the traffic for the search engine would be reduced and the loss of the traffic would have to be bared both websites.

Using humans to analysis a web site with respect to its keywords and tags is a time consuming process but it has to be implemented because it is the fundamentals of marketing that a dissatisfied customer is going to tell 20 other people about hi bad experience and thus the damaged goodwill is going to take a lot of time to repaired, in cases it is impossible to get back a dissatisfied customer.
