And,major development comes by way of residential property. In western UP,Ghaziabad was coming up as an industrial city and Meerut was growing inpopulation and becoming an educational hub. In order to meet growing needs ofthese cities, rapid commercial, residential and industrial work was on in thispart of the country. In order to make the city an attractive destination, UPstate government has proposed a number of projects in the city. Whenimplemented, they will put the city on national and international map, andchange the very outlook of the place in coming years. Delhi-MeerutExpressway Delhi-Meerut Expressway has been proposed as a 100m-wide ROWthat will start from the Inner Ring Road beyond Nizamuddin bridge in Delhi,pass via Dasna and come up till the Outer Ring Road in Meerut City. The 65kmlong access-controlled expressway, expected to be completed by end-2014, willnot only bring national capital within a motorable distance of one-hour fromMeerut, but will also ease pressure on the current connectivity of NH-58.National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is the executing agency. Meerut international airport The existing Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Air Strip at Gagol Road inMeerut will be expanded into an international airport. The airport expansion isseen as a move to decongest air traffic from Indira Gandhi InternationalAirport and cater to the burgeoning number of flyers from UP, NCR, Uttarakhandand Moradabad. The project has been conceptualized and selection for consultantis in progress. The project will be in PPP mode on design, build, finance,operate and transfer (DBFOT) basis. UP government has sanctioned expansion andwidening of current airstrip, at a cost of Rs 65 crore, to make it suitable fornight landing. Upper Ganga Canal Expressway Another 130-km-long access controlled expressway is proposedalong right bank of Upper Ganga Canal. The road will start from Purkaji inMuzaffarnagar and terminate at Dehra in Ghaziabad. Estimated to cost Rs 3,000crore, the project will be executed in PPP mode by state government. Aconsultant has already been selected for the project and is likely be completedby 2014. Outer ring road The outer periphery of Meerut will have a 100mwide andnearly 70-km-long outer ring road. This will facilit at e s m o o t h linkagesto existing NH-58, the proposed Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Garh Road, Hapur Road,Mawana Road, Sardhana Road and Parikshitgarh road. NHAI will execute theproject. New interstate busterminal   Meerut master planenvisages relocation or shifting of two bus terminals in the heart of the cityto other viable spots to ease heavy traffic within the city. With Baghpat Roadidentified as the new site, Bhainsali Depot of UPSRTC and Baghpat Bus Stand arelikely to be relocated here. In future, Sohrab Gate Depot of UPSRTC and HapurBus Stand could also be relocated near Lohia Nagar. Both the projects will bein PPP mode. Transport Nagar A new Transport Nagar site as proposed in the master planhas been identified adjacent to Vidya Knowledge Park, about two kilometers onBaghpat Road. Meerut Development Authority will execute the project. Multispeciality hospital-cum-medical college A25-acre site is to be provided at Lohiya Nagar Awasiye Yojna by MeerutDevelopment Authority for a 300-bed multispeciality hospital, which will laterbe amalgamated with a medical college. Widening and strengthening of six majorroads: Six major road-segments in almost all radial directions have been identifiedfor widening and strengthening. The roads will have wider cross sections,street lighting and plantation, service ducts, drains, footpaths and servicelanes. The identified roads include - Delhi Road (Begum Bridge to Partapurflyover); Baghpat Road (from crossing at bypass to Vidya Knowledge Park);Roorkee Road (from Sofiapur to bypass tri-junction); Mawana Road (Ganga NagarPS to Inner Ring Road Crossing); University Road (Jail Chungi to TejgarhiCrossing), and Gagol Road (Partapur Flyover to airstrip). Meerut DevelopmentAuthority is executing the projects under the Infrastructure Fund at a cost ofRs 41 crore. Dedicated Freight Corridor     A DedicatedFreight Corridor has been conceptualized by Indian Railways with the objectiveof speeding up freight train operations and achieving higher productivitythrough better utilization of railway assets and achieving greater customersatisfaction - Meerut region is part of the Eastern Freight Corridor, fromKolkatta to Ludhiana via Lucknow, Kanpur and Aligarh. Gas pipeline project     Gail Gas Ltd, awholly owned subsidiary of Gail India Ltd has opened an office at Meerut forexecuting Rs 308-crore gas pipeline project for the city. The 80-km-longnetwork of steel pipes called the Steel Grid, is scheduled for completion inthe next 3 years when the city will be linked to Dadri-Bawana-Nangal pipelinefrom Muradnagar. The CNG operations will start much earlier through mobilecarriers.
