A Police dog handler is someone who gives care and training to dogs used for law enforcement and competitions. The care a dog handler gives to the dog includes good grooming, proper nutrition, and adequate arrangements, like dog kennels, for sleeping or resting.

It is also important for the dog handler to have proper seating in a vehicle used for transporting the dog. The police course or training to become a police officer dog handler mainly consists of obedience lessons, agility and stamina. All handlers should have an adequate area for the police course training.

A dog handler does not have to be of a certain age to become a police officer; however there are obligations one must obtain prior to becoming an official. A person can become a police officer dog handler assistant with a notable dog handler.

There are also schools that offer a degree or police course including lessons in dog handling. Personal factors should be considered prior to taking up the police course or training. These factors include the person’s patience levels, sense of humor, physical and mental state and allergic reactions.

There are associations created and shared by dog handlers in the United Kingdom and beyond. These associations assist with broad ranges of helpful information for both dog owners and dog handlers.

Do you remember the old saying, "A Dog Is A Man's Best Friend?" For police dogs and dog handlers in other countries, they have more guidelines to adhere to than in the UK. However, dog handler police jobs are still popular in other countries and most especially in the USA and UK. The average pay scale for a dog handler in police jobs is quite a high range.
