Jailbreak Apple IOS 4.1 on iPhone 4

It’s not like we’re at all surprised, but it really didn’t take long for iPhone hackers to find yet another way to jailbreak Apple’s latest iOS 4.1, which enables nifty new features like HDR photos, HD video uploads, Game Center, TV show rentals, and iTunes Ping on the iPhone 4, 3GS and some iPod Touch models.

According to chatter on Twitter from both the iPhone Dev Team and the Chronic Dev Team, a new security hole in iOS has been found, allowing hackers to jailbreak the 4.1 software. The confirmation of a working jailbreak exploit on iOS 4.1 is good news to those that were burned by Apple after the company patched the security hole that made the web-based jailbreakme.com jailbreak solution possible.

Venerable iPhone Dev Team member MuscleNerd tweeted earlier today that “…Chronic Dev Team member pod2g got latest exploit just as 4.1 went public (lots of work left…keep away from 4.1 for now!” There were other confirmations to the same extent on Twitter today, the most intriguiing of which comes from pod2g, claiming that the new jailbreak exploit “Works on 4.1

Unlike the jailbreakme.com method, which took advantage of a security hole in the way the iPhone Safari browser handles PDF calls, this latest jailbreak vector harkens back to the good old days when the Dev Team forced their way in to the iPhone file-system through the bootrom. In due time, we’ll likely see this newfound bootrom exploit being put to use in the next jailbreak solution.

So, it’s only a matter of time before we can have our Game Center cake and eat it with our jailbreak muffins, to butcher a metaphor. There’s no timetable on the release of an iOS 4.1 jailbreak utility, but it shouldn’t be too long of a wait. In the meantime, if your jailbreak and ultrasn0w carrier unlock are important to you, the iPhone Dev Team warns against updating to 4.1!
