Kobo EReader VS Kindle 2, Which is the Winner?

Borders unleashed a new eReader into the marketplace -- the Kobo eReader. The ad for the device contains a quote from Wired Magazine hailing it as a "Kindle killer."

Below is a feature-by-feature comparison of Borders Kobo eReader and Amazon's Kindle 2. The Kindle 2 is available in two models -- a 6-inch display and a 9.7-inch display. This article considers the 6-inch display model.

Price was the first thing I noticed about these two eReaders. The Kindle 2 costs $259 versus $150 for the Kobo eReader. Does Amazon's product deliver $109 more value than Borders product?

The Kobo eReader and the Kindle 2 share some features. Both gadgets have 6-inch displays that utilize E Ink technology. E Ink allows glare-free viewing of content. The eReaders are also similar in size. The slightly smaller
Kobo weighs 2.2 ounces less than the Kindle 2.

Battery life is also comparable. Borders' website claims up to two weeks' use on a full charge. It boasts, "Turn up to 8000 pages before needing to recharge." The Kindle 2 documentation claims the user can read "one week with wireless on" and "two weeks without wireless on." In addition, both eReaders can be charged by computer via a USB port.

Access to an astronomically large number of digital books, either free or reasonably priced, is available for both products. ManyBooks(dot)net, Project Gutenberg, and Internet Archive offer pre-1923 books in the public domain free of charge. Plus, Borders, Amazon, and others have for-pay content available on their respective websites.

And the final similarity is the warranty. The Kobo eReader and the Kindle 2 each come with a year limited warranty. However, Amazon customers can opt for a two year extension.
