Lolita is a fashion that is influenced by the fashions of the Victorian and Eduardian eras, but maintains a rather modern appeal. It is a modest style that is creative and has spawned a number of sub-styles that adhere to Lolita fashion rules. These sub-styles cater to the different personalities of those who wish to become ingrained into the Lolita world. But first, you have to understand the Lolita effect.

First, the sexual undertones are muted. It does, however, relay a message that says, “I’m feminine, I’m young, and I’m pretty.” The many fluffs, ribbons, and frills that adorn a Lolita outfit are usually the apparel of young girls, but in Lolita fashion the innocence remains. Lolita is all about classical femininity with the multiple layered flare skirts, ruffled blouses, hair pieces, and all that completes the outfit.

The Gothic Lolita

The Gothic Lolita is one of the most common Lolita sub-types that exist. Such accessories as rosaries and roses are common. The colors tend to be dark, although dark makeup may be worn with lighter colors. It is not uncommon to see the Gothic Lolita wearing a mixture of light and dark colors. For instance, a light blue Lolita dress with black lace gloves may be the preference of a Gothic Lolita. This is also a style that caters to those girls wanting to try Lolita for the first time.

The Sweet Lolita

Cake and ice cream motifs tend to be the trend surrounding Sweet Lolita styles. The idea is to look as sweet as possible, but not to where you are wearing gum drop patterns on your dress. Sweet Lolitas tend to be the Mary-Jane wearing, lacy girls with white parasols keeping the sun out of their eyes.

The Country Lolita

The Country Lolita is a less common sub-type. This type is more likely to fall on the “not so popular” side of Lolita. Nature or flower motifs may be used. This means not as much ribbons or lace. In other words, it is a rather plain style, which is why you will not find so many Lolitas taking this route.

If you find a Lolita style that you enjoy, keep in mind that it is an expensive fashion. The materials are made of a high quality, there are accessories, and there is also a degree of layering. This means there can be many elements to an outfit. For some, it can take a while to build a solid Lolita wardrobe.
