A fireplace is a built up structure containing a fire and used for providing warmth and sometimes cooking. It consists of a firebox, a chimney or flue to allow gas and exhaust to escape. A fireplace is a central household feature because the members of a family find the flames and crackling sounds comforting. A fireplace has a foundation, a hearth, an ash-dump, door, chimney crate, cleanout door, a grate, a smoke chamber, and a spark arrestor. Mantels of the fireplaces are used for decoration.

Fireplaces are of many kinds:
1. Masonry fireplace that is made of brick or stone that can be fueled with wood, natural gas, propane fuel and biomass fuel sources
2. Prefabricated fireplaces with sheet metal fire boxes.
3. Vent less fireplaces are fueled with gel, liquid propane, bottled gas or natural gas. These require the least installation and burns with 100 percent efficiency. Besides giving good heat, they not present huge problems of air quality.

The heating of a fireplace is due largely to radiative heating that heats the surrounding objects of its vicinity and transfers the heat to the air. However, fireplaces are not what they used to be a few decades ago. Today, modern fireplaces are designed to suit the décor of the room they are installed in as they can be put into any room. Some major organizations like the Star Line Fire has an extensive range of beautiful modern fireplaces that are made of wood, limestone, and marble. These are available with matching mantles, arches, inserts, stoves etc.

Some modern fireplaces feature a chase cover, a cap, and a spark arrestor to prevent small animals from entering and allowing sparks to exit the chimney cavity. Coccon Fires, another organization, have launched ultra modern fireplace that offer an alternatively to coal guzzling fires that are environmentally friendly. Some sleek fireplaces contain a unique concept of a curved spherical shape but have only a 75% thermal energy efficiency rating.

Marble fireplaces are made from natural marble and are decorative. There is a range of marble fireplaces like the Victorian style marble fireplace, French, contemporary and many more styles of fireplaces including modern fireplaces. Stone fireplaces are quite common and are generally installed in a family’s living room. But these are used more for decoration as they contain elaborate designs and are considered antique rather than Modern fireplaces. Today, you can have a fireplace in any room of your house and in whatever style you wish.

An outside fireplaces is a place outside the home that is used to build fires and is similar in construction to an indoor fireplace. However, this is built only on a stone, brick or concrete patio and consists of a firebox and chimney. It requires regular maintenance to keep it looking and working well, but it may not cleaned as often as an indoor fireplace. This outdoor fireplace is generally used for cooking.
