Imagine you have left home with your best friend in the car, heading for one of the UK’s National Parks, such as the Yorkshire Dales, the Peak or Lake Districts or the North York Moors, and on the roof of your car is balanced a couple of mountain bikes .
You arrive at your destination, park up, and dismount the mountain bikes from the roof rack. Next, you get yourselves ready for the impressive trail that you’ve set yourselves for the day. Carefully checking all the equipment you’ll need and ensuring that your mountain bikes are in good condition, you mount your respective mountain bikes and put one foot on the pedals.
It is at that point that you realise that you’ve something missing – your torches. This is unfortunate because it’s already 10am and it is the middle of winter. Why is this important you ask? Well, the trail takes a good five hours, which means that all being well, you’ll be back at the car for about 3pm. However, if something were to go wrong.....?
You dismiss all notions relating to the lights and torches being anything like a problem, and press on.
BIG MISTAKE.
You fall off your mountain bike halfway around the trail and you’re both getting colder by the minute as the other tries to help support you to lower ground on foot. Your broken ankle doesn’t help. 3pm comes and goes.
IT GETS DARK. A STORM BREAKS. What happens next can be left to the imagination.
So essentially, if you forget your torches and there might be the slightest chance of something going wrong, then don’t continue. Mountain bikes are great for taking on as a hobby, but it really doesn’t matter how much you enjoy doing it – make sure you are prepared.
