When playing online games, it’s already common knowledge that there are times when you have to put up with some rudeness, bad manners and irate tempers. Even if some game communities are more tolerable than others, this is the kind of behavior that is expected of every multiplayer game online. Anonymity is one of the key factors why most people have the guts to display such rude behavior. However, this is not enough of an excuse to forego proper manners and good conduct. Here are some tips on how to maintain proper decorum in online games:

Be a Good Sport- There are still immature gamers out there that end up laughing at their opponent’s demise and blowing up their own ego at their win. It’s advisable that you play it cool. Try humility for one and don’t rub it in your opponent’s face. You also shouldn’t take losses to heart. Don’t wrongly accuse them of cheating just because you lost. Don’t throw accusations when you don’t have proof to back it up. It is a fact that there are better players in the game. You just have to focus on practicing so that you hone your skill and become a better player.

Play Fair- Using foul words is like an admission that you can’t win without playing dirty. If you value winning, then you must understand the importance of a fair fight. Learn from successful players, and keep practicing what they do. If you find the competition to be too much for your liking, look for a different game instead of cheating just to win the thing.

Aside from the canned food Spam, anything connoted by the term is generally disliked by the online community. This includes multiplayer games. Avoid spamming the voice channel of a game - if there is one - with mindless microphone chat. The in-game chat features that allow players to talk to each other can also be abused in this way, particularly with people simply repeating the same thing over and over. In general, if people are not responding in the middle of a game, it is because it is in the middle of a game. If they are not responding outside of it, they are either occupied by something or are not interested.

Always remember that every player was, at one point in time, new to the game and new to the community he plays in. This means that, at one point in time, he had to learn the terms used in the game and the "culture" of the player base that he was in. Instead of playing the elitist veteran, try to be as welcoming of the non-stupid newbies as possible. It is unreasonable to expect someone to learn everything about a game in a short span of time - even something like "Tetris" can take months to master. Masters aren’t born; they’re made.

Don’t just drop out of the game, particularly when losing. This is considered an act of rudeness and something that signifies being a very sore loser. Even if the team or the player isn’t doing well, it is proper for them to finish the game and congratulate the winner. There are legitimate reasons to suddenly pull out of a game, but being the loser is not one of them.

For team games, remember that working with others is a must. Victory in a truly team-based game is something that can’t be done without working well with the others to understand their strengths and what they bring to the table. Hogging the spotlight only leads to bad performance, since the "star player" tends to drag the entire team down to push himself up.

Ignore Insults- It’s not the best course of action to insult back when someone says something bad about you. Doing so will only make you look as pathetic as them. Online gaming can become very intense and competitive, with some people getting upset and emotional over win-loss ratios. However, with a little etiquette and respect, problems can be minimized.

Certainly online Games exciting and fun, but only if appropriate decorum is observed.
