Music lessons could be one of the best things for a child’s education, claim researchers. Brain tests show how early musical training improves memory and IQ within as little as four months.
Even children as young as four can benefit, not only in playing music but in developing other mental skills. Experts say music should be routinely taught in pre-school and primary school to maximise children’s brain development.
Brain scans showed four to six year-old given music lessons generated more sophisticated responses than those who did not.
Their brain processing systems worked faster and general memory capacity increased, according to a study in the science journal, Brain.
Lead researcher Laurel Trainor, of Canada’s McMaster Institute for Music and the Mind, In Ontario, said after a year’s musical training, the brains of children who had lessons responded differently to music. But their brain responses were also significantly improved in a memory test linked to a wide range of mental skills, compared with children who had no music training. He added: “This is the first study to show that brain responses in young, musically trained and untrained children change differently over the course of a year.”
Trainor said better brain processing was apparent within four months of those having music lessons. The researchers measured sounds and found that they had better responses to tones and their brains worked faster at processing the sounds.
