When you think of an Olympus digital camera, it is likely that you will think about the V series because there are lots of affordable Olympus cameras in that category and they are extremely easy to use. Some of the pricier cameras in this category are the Stylus series that look more stylish and come with some good specs for serious photo taking. But you are after some extra durability and underwater photography, you should go for the Olympus waterproof digital camera models. If you like the look of the Stylus series, you might as well go for the Stylus Tough series as they are all stylish waterproof models.
Common Features
All of these Olympus Waterproof Digital Camera models that have the Stylus Tough label are waterproof, shockproof, and freezeproof which is a nice combination if you plan to go on a long trip and you are having second thoughts in taking your digital camera. It is easy for most digital cameras to break if the temperature is too low or if you drop it by accident. It is important that the camera is waterproof not only to prevent damage from accidental splashes but also to take some nice underwater photos.
All models have a 2.7-inch LCD display on the back and have anti-glare technology so it is easy to take photos under direct sunlight. They are also capable of recording 720p video which is nice to take advantage of if you go underwater. The Dual Image Stabilization and AF Tracking keep the photos clear and the blur minimal even if the subject is moving in fast speeds. Each model comes in four different colors.
Olympus Stylus Tough 3000
The 3000 model is the least expensive out of the Stylus Tough trio dipping just below $200. It still has some nice specs that are similar to any midrange camera like a 12-megapixel sensor and 3.6x wide-angle zoom with a 2.7-inch LCD on the back. It is possible to take pictures underwater as long as you do not go beyond 10 feet.
Olympus Stylus Tough 6020
The 6020 model is capable of taking 14-megapixel photos and has higher 5x optical zoom so there is more flexibility in taking better pictures. It is the most affordable camera to get if you want tap control which makes it easier to do certain operations like changing the flash mode. This is very useful if you are wearing gloves and wish to easily take photos underwater. It is a better camera to for underwater photography since you go as deep as 16 feet with this model.
Olympus Stylus Tough-8000
The 8000 model is a high-end waterproof model that you can go as deep as 33 feet underwater. In addition to the shockproof and freezeproof characteristics, this model is crushproof as well so applying up to 220 pounds of pressure will not affect the camera and its internals at all. It also has double the internal memory capacity with 2 GB to work with.
