What is Drop Shipping?

Drop shipping is a method of retailing goods without keeping an inventory. An store owner sells a product either from a physical store site or an online store. The product is then shipped to the customer from the dropshipper or wholesaler directly to the customer. As a business owner, you will build a relationship with a dropshipper or wholesaler.

Finding Drop shippers and Wholesalers

Make sure the drop shipper offers competitive prices, by performing a search on the particular item you wish to have drop shipped, you can get an idea of how the drop shippers price measures up. Considering ordering a sample from the drop shipper to see firsthand how their system works. This tests the shipping speed, shipping quality and delivery of the product. Most drop shippers will ask for a Tax ID number from you. You should be weary of companies that don’t.

Some wholesalers charge fees to be a retailer of their products. There are few advantages to paying this fee. You should try and find a wholesaler who will not charge to sell their products. The wholesaler should use a reliable and recognizable shipping method like UPS, FedEex, and USPS. A shipper that has tracking capabilities is better, since most customers like to know where their item is and when they can expect to receive it. Also look into a wholesalers return and exchange policies on defective products. The length of the middle man chain also determines the original costs of products before the retailers mark up.

Earn Money Using Drop Shippers/Wholesalers

Creating an online store or even selling on Ebay using the dropship business model can be very profitable. When a customer places an order for a product from your store, you will the place the order with the dropshipper wholesaler who in turn sends the item to the customer. If the customer pays $25 for the item including shipping and the wholesaler chargers $16 on their side for the item including the shipping, the drop shipper makes a profit of $9 on the sale. Drop shipping is a great way to earn money. Good examples of drop shippers making high profit margins are electronic drop shippers. Electronic wholesalers offer electronics at competitive prices and drop shippers who do not maintain inventories can also offer good deals. Store bought electronics carry a heftier price tag, since the store has to maintain an inventory. Electronic drop shippers don’t need to keep inventory and thus have higher profit margins.
