It is easy to get lost in the small things, from Jewelry wholesale of http://www.jewelrywholesale-cn.com/ A traveling show dedicated to the work of three women, ranging from their mid-50s to early 70s, who have helped to put the contemporary jewelry of their small country on a par with the New Jewelry movement in Europe & the United States. The show celebrates the 60th anniversary of Israel's statehood, & Israeli history & Jewish culture provide the themes of lots of of these sleekly Modernist designs. One of the three artists -- Vered Kaminski, Esther Knobel & Deganit Stern Schocken -- studied at the New Bezalel Academy, an art school descended from pre-statehood days, which promoted Jewish handicrafts in biblical subjects completed in a hybrid Oriental/Western tradition (the "Bezalel style"). Bezalel metalwork was marked by arabesques of inlaid silver in copper or brass ("Damascene," an antique Middle Eastern process) added to objects with a religious or traditional Jewish use. The school lapsed in 1929 only to be reopened in 1935 by German-Jewish refugees, who brought with them a number of the Bauhaus manner of the country they had fled. But the period documented in "Women's Tales" is much later, beginning in the 1960s, when the influences on Israeli national culture began to come not from Europe but The united states. "When I look at much of the feminist & narrative elements in these pieces", said Newark Museum curator for the decorative arts Ulysses Dietz, "I don't see as much European influence as American. when you see body-fitted pieces that relate to performance art (as in Schocken's jewelry) or objects with some kind of feminist expression (like Knobel's work). I think those things are essentially American." Knobel's "Immigrants Brooch" (1993) definitely has a Pop feel, with its nickel-silver structure supporting a rabbit & one human figures made from recycled tin cans, & the same goes for her "Warrior on Horse Brooch" (1983) made from the same materials. Schocken, , uses odd, nonprecious sources - paper, cotton & found objects as well as silver, amethyst & semi-precious stones - fashionable elegant brooches, for example, that resemble the projectile-hurling Roman ballistas used to assault the Judean fortress of Masada. Vered Kaminski (currently a teacher at Bezalel) is a much more architectonic jeweler, who encloses common stones & gold nuggets in gold wire armatures or builds complex necklaces out of structural elements (her volumetric shapes often look like snake skeletons or dried trees). Five of the most striking objects here is a bowl made of silver trapezoids by Kaminski in 1996 that seems to defy both gravity & its own structural integrity. The oldest artist here is Bianca Eshel-Gershuni, a self-taught jeweler whose work is perhaps the most personal on display, & the most unusual. In addition to gold & silver, Eshel-Gershuni uses plaster animal figurines, feathers, plastic, mirrors, coral, photos, burlap, even a camel's tooth. Much of her work centers on her relationship with her sister, reflecting early frustrations & later acknowledgements of her own inherited traits. Fashion jewelry is a specialized & often miniaturized field, inspired by feminine ornament & usually worn by women, & you must look hard & close to find the historical & political in its forms. But they are there, if only subtly & selectively. Kaminski, for example, says, "While I see the Arab rebellion, the Intifada, on TV, I do not feel it directly. People I am in contact here are lovely, & I have my work. ..."
