Personal Injury Attorney: It’s About Protecting Your Rights, Not Fattening Their Wallets

We’ve all seen the commercials for personal injury attorneys, and they seem to all say the same things, “If you’ve been injured at work, or in an auto accident… call us and we’ll get you settled!” But in times of need, when you might actually find yourself needing to hire a lawyer, money should not be the only thing that you’re looking for. You want to find a personal injury attorney who is going to go for bat for you, get you the settlement you deserve, but most importantly, one who is going to protect your rights.

Admittedly, it may seem like extra work to research your lawyers in depth, especially at a time when you’ve been victimized and need to find help fast, but it is worth your time to do a little digging. You want to be sure that the personal injury attorney that you hire is committed to fighting for victims’ rights and not just looking to make a quick pay day out of you. One way to scope out a lawyer’s commitment to the cause is to find out if they are a member of your State’s Trial Lawyer associations or any advocacy groups working for victim rights. Membership in national organizations such as the American Association for Justice or the Academy of Trial Advocacy is one great indicator of good intentions.

There is one way in which those TV ads can be of some assistance in finding a personal injury attorney though. It’s important to find someone who has experience, and has a good track record of success. If someone is doing well enough to produce television ads, then they’ve probably been around a while and it should be easy to look into their background and make sure that they’ve had a good success rate.

One of the most important things to consider when looking for a lawyer, is something that no one else and no amount of research can aid you with, and that is your own trust and communication. The person you hire will have to advocate for you and help those in a position to make decisions to understand your case to the fullest. If you do not feel that you can communicate with them, then they probably won’t be able to communicate properly with a judge or jury. Law is their field; you’ve been thrown into it unwillingly. How well they are able to explain the laws to you is a good indicator of their worth. If at the end of your consultation you don’t feel that you understand what your rights are or what the process is going to be like, then you should probably look for someone else.

Remember, a personal injury attorney shouldn’t be concerned with money alone. If you’ve been victimized, you need someone who is going to protect your rights and see that those responsible for your situation receive the proper repercussions. Protect yourself by taking the time to find a lawyer who is looking to protect you.
