If you are new to Dubai, and are wondering about suitable temporary or short term accommodation, renting a hotel room or hotel apartment may be one the best ways to get started. Once your employment or stay is finalized, you will be able to look for an apartment on a longer term basis. Rental agreements are generally made or a six monthly or annual basis, and thankfully there are laws that limit the increase in rent that the landlord can charge over the previous year. Here are some easy, inexpensive ideas for adding your personal touch to the space you inhabit: CHOOSE A FEELING THAT YOU WANT: Apartments on rental generally tend to be smaller spaces, so choosing a set of feelings as a theme to cover the whole space will both visually enlarge the space and make the task much easier. If you want a relaxed, calming atmosphere to unwind in, it is advisable to stick to neutral or cool colors such as blues and greens. On the other hand, if you want to express your colorful personality, you can experiment by using bright and energetic color combinations. LOOK AT YARD SALES, CLASSIFIED ADS, OR EVEN THRIFT SHOPS FOR FURNITURE: Dubai is full of such choices so don't be afraid to take these steps. Once again, you would be wise to limit your choices to simple pieces that will blend with any décor, in case of a move or a change of taste. You could go for a simple platform bed with concrete cinder clocks and ¾ inch plywood or board. Futon mattresses are less expensive than regular ones, and give good firm support. ADDING SOME PERSONALITY: Now it's time to add some personality! You can use simple objects such as pillows and blankets to add color and charm. It lends a warm aura to the room. Be sure to cover dark spots, blemishes and other areas of imperfectness. CREATIVE WAYS TO ADD COLOR: Even if the rental agreement prohibits you from coloring the room, you can add pizzazz by using picture frames hanging on walls, pretty pieces of fabric, CD covers, Andy Warhol type soup can labels, or even sheet music. Pick something you love and let it show. REFURBISHING OLD FURNITURE: A well considered coat of paint can bring life to anything from old disused furniture to hidden library shelves. Clean the surface well, sand lightly, then prime with a specialty primer. Then simply paint the piece with regular semi gloss house paint. Painting all the furniture in a single one color ties it together and also makes the room seem larger. JUST BECAUSE IT'S RENTAL DOESN'T MEAN IT CAN'T BE HOME: You can make a rental space personal by adding your own stamp to each and every room. Bring out family photos, use rugs and seat cushions, or hang your own chimes in every room entrance. Such creativity adds personal touches and helps you express yourself.
