Players and Positions in a Rugby League Game

The first difference between rugby league football and rugby union football is that the two games have different number of players. Although the rules of both games are similar, the number of players also shows how the game is to be played. In rugby union, there are fifteen players while there are thirteen in rugby league.

Number 1 is the fullback, who is mainly positioned near the goal post behind the main line of defenders. The fullback must be able to defend the goal posts from any opponent that breaks the main line of defense. The fullback’s most important role is to defend his position from the opposing players’ attacks; he can turn this defense into attack.

Numbers 2 and 5 are wingers, who are the fastest runners in the team. Number 2 is on the right side of the field, ten meters from the goal line, while Number 5 is at left side of the field, twenty meters from the goal line. Together, they help the fullback block the kicks from the opponents. They make use of the extra space in the field to run, catch, and pass the ball.

Numbers 3 and 4 are center players, located further inside the Glendale rugby league field. They are normally medium-sized, but many teams also have center players who are relatively large in build. They may play as either play defensive or go all out on the offensive. Their position allows them to experience the rougher parts of the game, running up and down the pitch and passing to the wingers.

Number 6 and 7 play the halfbacks who stand on the very middle of theGlendale rugby league field. Number 6 is the stand-off who directs the ball to the rest of his team; he is often the best kicker. Number 7 is the scrum-half who is often called the “first receiver” and is a very good passer.

Other players in the team are the forward players, all occupying the other half of the Glendale rugby league field. Number 9 is the hooker who starts the game. Standing on either side of the hooker, Numbers 8 and 10 are props, the heaviest members of the team. Numbers 11 to 13 are forwards. Numbers 11 and 12 are second-row forwards who are responsible for attacks while Number 13 is the loose forward responsible for passing.
