So firstly let's take a closer look to get a better understanding of the various video and audio formats compatible with iPod before we start the conversion process.

Video Formats:

MPEG-4 (MP4): A very popular format for video and audio encoding. MPEG-4 is part of a wide variety of production and delivery applications, from professional and consumer high-definition video cameras, to distribution of home media, mobile video and broadcast television.

H.264: Due to its high quality but lower bit rate, many video professionals use H.264 for general video and web delivery. It is also known as MPEG-4 AVC (Advanced Video Coding). Apple video and audio standard format, M4V, is based on H.264.

Audio Formats:

MP3: Known as MPEG-2 Audio Layer 3, is perhaps the most common audio format for web and device delivery.

AAC: Or Advanced Audio Coding, is generally considered the "new MP3", since it compresses at a similar bit rate but maintains higher sound quality. It's an attractive audio format when ripping CDs or sound from a DVD.

WAV: Waveform Audio File Format, similar to the AIFF audio format and is considered as a very high-quality codec since it supports completely uncompressed audio. It’s used on Windows computers.

Tips: If you need to convert iTunes .m4a, .m4p to mp3, aac, wav, you can use Tune4mac M4P Converter for Mac or Tune4win M4P Converter for Windows.

Step By Step: How to Convert DVD to iPod

If you search the Internet, you'll find it's hard to choose one from lots of similar DVD to iPod converters. To clear up the way for you, I recommend Tune4mac DVD Converter Pro, which is professional in converting DVD and videos to iPod, iPhone, iPad, PSP/PS3, BlackBerry, Gphone, etc.

1. Download and install Tune4mac DVD Converter Pro free trial.

2. Launch Tune4mac and click "Load DVD" button.

3. Select output format as "iPod" and output folder.

4. Click "Encode" to start conversion.

I hope this tutorial on video and audio formats will help you to decide which format is best for your iPod. Though there are a limited number of video and audio formats supported by the iPod, the available options are still great for creating the best possible visual and sound experience.
