Preparation is everything when it comes to selling a car

Whether a car is being prepared to be sold by a dealer or an owner, there are a few things that should be taken into consideration which will ensure a greater chance of someone wanting to buy it.

You will first need to take a look at the vehicle that you are trying to sell and ask yourself if this would be a car that you would want to purchase from someone. Most people who are looking to buy a used car are on a budget and really need good transportation that is reliable and affordable.

When they are considering buying a used car, many people are realistic and understand that there might be a few things which will need their attention, especially if it’s being sold by the owner. The fewer problems that you have with the used car that you are trying to sell, and the better the standards to which it has been maintained, the more likely someone will buy it.

But it is important to fix what can be attended to on a used car – such as blown bulbs or worn tyres - so that prospective buyers will immediately be able to tell that it has not been neglected, and so will be less tempted to haggle hard over the price.

And despite being told that in general, appearances aren’t everything, this is certainly not true when it comes to selling a car. Whether it is being taken to a dealer as part-exchange, or being sold privately, having the car thoroughly washed will give the impression that you have cared for the car, and so will make any prospective new owner more likely to want to look after it too.

When showing a car to any prospective buyer, be they from the trade or a private buyer, always try to clear the inside of all belongings, and certainly of any long-discarded rubbish. Be upfront about the vehicle’s history and issues that it has had in the past, and this will give any prospective new owner fewer opportunities to walk away from a sale. For example, listing items which have been replaced will show a potential buyer that the vehicle has been given the care it deserves.

There are so many potential outlets for selling a car these days that a little thought about the way a vehicle is presented is necessary to make it stand out from the crowd. So if it is being sold through a private advertisement, ensure that a good quality photograph is used, as this will attract the immediate attention of serious buyers, and show that the seller, too, is serious in their intent.

Used cars sold at car dealerships are always carefully chosen, and undergo thorough preparation and checks before being put on sale. So they are always a good place to look for anyone wanting to buy used cars.
