A University of Utah professor is out on bail on charges that he viewed child pornography on his laptop while flying from Utah to Boston. He said that he acquired the laptop through a university grant. A Penn State football coach is accused of raping children in a university shower. A Syracuse University basketball coach is accused of sexual molestation of a ball boy on road trips. The US Department of Energy is being questioned in conjunction with the Solyndra scandal emails, accused of trying to delay layoffs at the solar company. The list goes on.

One thing is clear: Companies, universities, and other organizations are at risk for lawsuits and damage to their brand’s reputation if they do not monitor their employee’s activities during working hours and while using company equipment. Companies can be held responsible for damages that occur when employees misuse technology, particularly the Internet. Employees have been accused of copyright violations, slander, harassment, racism, viewing discriminating material, downloading company viruses, giving away company secrets, and more. The list is almost endless.

Lawsuits that settle as a result of any of these accusations usually cost companies around 1.5 million dollars. It seems much more cost effective to install Internet monitoring software and stop employees before they cause problems. In many cases, just monitoring the actions of employees is not enough, and filtering can also be added, preventing employees from even accessing detrimentaland otherwise non-work-related websites.

By using Internet monitoring software, companies, universities, and other organizations can prevent employees from downloadingharmful, illegal or copyrighted material. This software can also protect against the risk of illegal software being installed on a company owned computer, protecting the company from being liable for any damages.

Internet monitoring software is a very cost effective solution, usually priced on the number of employees, for businesses to protect against lawsuits, viruses, and keep employees focused on their work. It monitors and records keystrokes, so that all employee internet activity can be audited. It reports websites visited, applications used, emails (including attachments),and chats, even if the employee is working remotely.

Internet monitoring software is non-obtrusive. In many cases, employees are shocked to realize how many hours they spend online in non-work related activities when they are shown usage reports. Internet monitoring software is cost effective and easy protection for companies, universities, and other organizations that are at risk because their employees can use computers and mobile devices inunethical ways.
