Environmental problems are critical problems facing all countries of the world. The government of China attaches great importance to the protection of the environment. It is also a serious problem facing China mineral industry. Environmental issues during mineral exploitation are always the critical issues for the healthy development of China mineral industry. The environmental issues lie in two aspects: one is sabotage of nature in mining; another is pollution by waste water, slag and gas in smelting and separation process. Now, just take rare earth industry as an example.
The word “Rare Earths” is really the hot topic of the world since 2009. Many kinds of medium paid great attention on China rare earth industry because of quota limitation, but in 2009, the price of rare earth product also fell down to the bottom. From 1985 to 1998, rare earth export was encouraged by the government with export tax rebate regulation. Quota was imposed since 1999. Before 2004, more than 70% of the total production was exported. After 2004, the export proportion gradually declined to 30%. However, due to international demand for rare earths has always been in a state of imbalance. The production capacity was estimated at 20 ten thousand tons per year now. The total quantity control regulation for mining was implemented since 2007. In 2009, China consumed 7.4 ten thousand tons of rare earths, occupied 57.7 of total production, and 55.2% was consumed in new materials.
In some areas of China, the rare earth mining led to the destruction of vegetation, water loss and soil erosion. The related government has established many strict policies to protect environment, such as license for mining and access conditions for producing rare earths. Unfortunately, driven by profits and influenced by local protectionism, rare earth mining has always been in a state of disorder. There were serious problems of unauthorized mining, mining rich deposits and abandoning poor deposits. Tailing Dam itself has also polluted the around village, environment and underground water. The polluted water is not suitable for drinking and agricultural irrigation. Utilization and management for the tailings dam will be a very serious problem. In mineral exloitation and production, many machines are used such as excavators, jaw crushers, belt conveyor, impact crushers.
Environmental issues during rare earth production are always the critical issues for the healthy development of China rare earth industry. The government of China attaches great importance to the protection of the environment. The environmental issues lie in two aspects: one is sabotage of nature in mining; another is pollution by waste water, slag and gas in smelting and separation process. During Rare earth smelting, extraction process, a large number of chemical raw materials, such as acid and alkali, extraction agent were used, producing a large amount of waste (exhaust) gas, waste water, and waste residue. The government is trying to curb illegal mining and smuggling. It’s time to establish multiply supply of rare earth materials world so as to assure the healthy development of rare earth related hi-tech industry.
