There’s no denying that the high street has suffered majorly in the past two years, whilst 2009 was seen as a steady march back out of a recession it still had many casualties including big name brands such as Borders and Woolworths falling victim to a poor financial climate, fuelled by reluctance of some consumers to buy. At the moment there are many shops struggling to meet targets that are critical to their survival and so you need to take control of your business and more importantly, how it is marketed and optimised to encourage sales.  This is done via many strategies but the overall aim remains, encouraging people to enter your store and spend. Advertising is a key way to encourage this, either local TV or Radio or written media will be able to advertise your company and any promotions or new products you have.  You ideally want to introduce promotions that appeal to consumers and the mindset that many of them are in at the moment.  Customers are looking for deals and savings, advertising that mentions certain percentages off prices or low prices are going to catch the consumer’s attention and make them more likely to come on down to your store. On the high street you need to have an effective storefront to draw in the crowds.  Having attractive products on show in the shop window is an obvious technique but large posters and signage announcing promotions in bright colours is going to catch the eye and make people take notice of your storefront. Outside of your business it is worthwhile purchasing sandwich boards or pavement signs that can not only promote your store but it also acts as a signpost to pedestrians and motorists so they know exactly where your store is.  Whether they make their way into your store now or later on you have at least made your presence known and so if they are looking for stores that sell products you stock then they are going to remember to come to your business. Once inside the shop your customers will want to go to what they want, not spend a good few minutes wandering around searching.  Having adequate posters, signs and other indicators of what section they need to look for is important, especially in larger multi-department stores.  Store maps may even be needed for shops that span many floors, this is usually in the form of posters or signs hanging from the ceiling as this is high up for all customers to see no matter where they are or how crowded your store may be. Optimising your retail space to make it more customer friendly and easier to find what customers are after is vital to ensure customers enjoy shopping at your store which could lead to more customers through recommendation. Use of effective Point of Sale items like A Boards and Pavement Signs can help promote your business and drive more customers through your doors, check them out online to see what you could get to promote your business.
