State representatives, the Mayor and City Councilmembers will attend today’s 4 p.m. groundbreaking ceremony for the North Main Street Improvement Project. The project includes improvements to a 1.2- mile stretch of North Main Street between Alvin Drive and Bernal Drive. The improvements include the installation of roughly 70 new trees and shrubs within the landscaped median island (Bernal to Laurel), a new gateway monument, pavement improvements, pedestrian access ramps, new energy efficient lighting, and minor traffic signal improvements.
The project is funded with approximately $2.25 million of State Proposition 1B Funds approved by voters in 2007 for local streets and roads. The project was awarded to Granite Construction Company in the amount of roughly $1.8 million.
Mayor Donohue stated that "These improvements are a key component to the reemergence of this gateway to our community and will showcase Salinas' economic development and green initiatives."
