Scalloping from Cape San Blas Florida

Scalloping in St Joseph Bay on Cape San Blas Florida is an activity most people will likely enjoy. The St Joseph Bay is most often serene, pristine and the depths are mostly uniform. You do not require a vessel or any special things. Kids, as young as four, and their grandparents will enjoy the day scalloping and snorkling in the crystal clear waters of the bay. The season ordinarily begins about the first of July and ends about mid September. The method for collecting scallops is quite easy. Put on your snorkel and mask then swim below and collect scallops. Some areas will have higher concentrations compared to other locations. Try looking in places which are not so easily gotten to by boat or may be six feet or more These are probably areas that may not have been scalloped before.

Requirements for Scalloping

1. Florida Saltwater fishing license for all persons over 16
2. Sunscreen
3. Some spoons
4. A dive flag mounted on your boat or floatation close by
5. A pint container
6. Carry something to eat and drink
7. Fins, net bag, snorkel and mask

How to clean your scallops

Now that you have your scallops the best time to clean them is when you are still on the water. Divide up the scallops with those cleaning and give out the spoons. Stick the end of the spoon into the slightly opened scallop. Use the side of the spoon to separate the bottom scallop attachment to the shell. Now pop the shell open. Place the side of the spoon to the base of the muscle from the hinged side of the scallop. Pinch the soft part of the scallop using your thumb then lift this membrane off the scallop meat like taking a shirt over the head of a child. Now you can separate the muscle from the other shell.

How to prepare your scallops

Know that scallops can be consumed raw like oysters. This will assist you to understand the preparation principles of a hot pan and short cooking time. I like to prepare the side dishes beforehand. My favorite option is sautéed carrots with green beans using light olive oil. When finished I use the same pan for sautéeing the scallops. Apply season salt, cajun spices and pepper generously. Gently place the scallops in the hot pan. If you hear the sizzle the pan is hot enough. You want the scallops to sear and very lightly brown. After this turn and brown the other side. You should allow another 30-40 seconds before draining. All that is left is to eat your scallops with everyone. If you want more great ideas visit bobzio.com .
