Everyone has heard about Broadway. It’s the New York equivalent of London’s West End, and many famous names have taken their place on stage there in shows, musicals and plays of all descriptions.
If you are in New York for a long weekend or an extended break, it’s well worth trying to get tickets for one of the shows there. Broadway itself has been there for many years, and in fact it is the oldest street in the city that runs from the north to the south. In other times, way back in history, this same stretch was nothing more than a trail known as the Wickquasgeck Trail, so perhaps we should be thankful the name was changed to something a bit more memorable!
Not all of Broadway is dotted with theatres, but you will find a fair few around the Times Square area. There are more than three dozen major theatres in the Broadway area, giving you lots of possibilities for seeing a show while you are in town.
For example one of the most famous shows on Broadway at the moment is Chicago. This can be found at the Ambassador Theatre, which is on West 49th Street. Elsewhere you could indulge in seeing The Merchant of Venice until 2011 at least. This can be found at the Broadhurst Theatre on West 44th Street. Alternatively you might have fond memories of Mary Poppins. If this is the case you can see the stage show version of this much loved story at the New Amsterdam Theatre on West 42nd Street for the foreseeable future.
As you can see there are lots of different kinds of shows on Broadway at any one time. You will probably be aware of some of the most famous shows, including Jersey Boys, Brief Encounter and Mamma Mia! But there are other less well known shows that are just as worthy of being seen. You might even be able to squeeze in more than one show while you are in New York.
When you are looking for tickets you should try the box office for any particular show you want to see. You can also try booking them in advance if you want better seats and you know exactly what night you will be free.
On the other hand you could leave it up to fate to decide which show you should see. In any event you will certainly enjoy wandering up and down Broadway and soaking in the atmosphere of this famous thoroughfare. Flights to New York generally land at JFK Airport, but once you are settled in you can head for the bright lights to see what shows could be in store for you. It’s very easy to get caught up in the excitement of Broadway.
