When it comes to sending goods abroad, for many people it will simply be a case of sending a parcel via your local postal service or parcel courier. Indeed this process may be seamless when shipping a plain and ordinary parcel, but may well not offer the services you or your client needs.
Cargo, in most instances is deemed as large objects such as machinery, or machine parts either of which fit in a part or full container.
When it comes to shipping such cargo you need to put in far more thought as to how the goods will reach their destination.
Firstly you need to know if the goods you are sending can legally be exported or not. As what is legal in one country is not in another. Delays = Heartache = cost.
Secondly you need to establish that your cargo is well enough packed as the environmental considerations that it may have to go through en route to its destination can be severe, varying from extreme heat, to well below freezing.
Export licences are the key factor when it comes to shipping goods, in fact paperwork is king! If you have the wrong paperwork then your goods will most likely be delayed or worst case confiscated. Make no mistake shipping the wrong goods can cost you big time.
Cargo can be shipped by air or sea, with the preference being for larger items to be shipped by sea to keep the shipping costs low.
Yet regardless of the size of your parcel you still need to think about its security, and these days you can buy a tracking device for a few hundred dollars that can be inserted in your packing crate enabling you to establish in real time its exact location in the World.
This is a worthy investment particularly if your cargo is worth several thousand dollars. Often investing in such a security device can save you far more in the long term in terms of reduced insurance premiums.
The decision as to whether to ship your cargo by air or sea is often down to the cost that your client is prepared to pay, be this driven by financial or business demands. Inevitably there will always be a compromise between speed of delivery and cost of delivery.
At the forefront of your mind should be how well your goods look on delivery, as simply put badly packed cargo will cost you sales.
