Prevention,if you have allergies, limit exposure to allergens and use antihistamines andor nasal steroid sprays. When you have a cold, use a cool-mist humidifier anddecongestants to promote drainage. Chronic sinusitis sufferers should drinkplenty of liquids and avoid tobacco smoke and alcohol. Thetreatment Steaminhaled from a basin of hot water can thin the mucus and ease symptoms. Overthe counter oral or nasal decongestants should not be used for more than threedays. People with high blood pressure, heart disease, arrhythmias, or glaucomashould ask their doctor about the safety of using oral decongestants.Non-prescription pain relievers, ice packs, or warm compress may soothe sinuspain. Surgery may be needed to drainsinuses in very rare cases and also hospitalization and intravenous antibioticsare required for severe bacterial sinusitis.
