The popularity of social media sites over the past few years has led to business opportunities for companies everywhere, including recruitment companies. Social media networking can enable recruiters to gain new contacts and build relationships in ways never seen before.
When searching for candidates, linkedin and facebook pages will tell recruiters a lot more than a traditional resume, linkedin profiles will contain work history and qualifications, also recommendations from employers or clients, groups they are members of and what they are looking for e.g. a new job, sales opportunities etc. Facebook has been used by recruiters and employers to find out more about the person behind the c.v. giving an insight into their personality and outside interests and hobbies..
What is important to remember is most recruitment agencies across the world now use it as part of their recruitment advertising and marketing strategies. As with any other activity marketing, the key is to stand out from the crowd. There are several ways this can be done using the most popular social media sites; twitter, facebook and linkedin, for example;
Twitter; follow relevant people and companies, reply to any messages and send messages to thank anyone who follows you. Tweet regularly, promote your current vacancies and also tweet news about the agency, staff, industry or job market news, make some interesting or funny, also check the trending topics, if you can contribute something to the trends this can get noticed by a lot of people.
Facebook; A facebook page should be designed and presented in an appealing style, keep the page updated with vacancies, company and industry news, photographs etc. Connect with fans of your page, they obviously have an interest in the page and the company so keep them interested and show an interest in them.
Linkedin; Joining relevant groups will help you to connect with people in that industry whether they are currently in the job market or not. Starting discussions can help build relationships and get you noticed, vacancies can be advertised on group pages and by discussing non – employment related industry topics you can demonstrate your knowledge and interest, building trust and standing out from the other recruiters.
Despite the growing popularity of social media there are pros and cons and whether to use the free or paid services. For most recruiters and employers it will be a part of their business development and marketing strategies, alongside job board advertising and sales, in some industries like media, marketing and creative industries it will be more effective than, for example, civil engineering or law. What is certain for all recruiters, job seekers and employers, social media has changed the face of recruitment and any company without an effective strategy will be left behind.
