Contact lens is an artificial lens that is used to place on eyes to correct vision. These are used not only for correcting vision, but also for cosmetic purpose and for therapeutic reasons, post surgery therapy, casually for adding colour to the eyes and so on. The use of lens has increased to a great extent since its inception. Statistics show that about 2/3 women wear lenses. People are influenced to wear contact lenses for many reasons.

People opting for lens usually wear them to get rid of spectacles or to change the appearance of their eyes. There are people who wear contacts for the purpose to correct their visions. It is a fact that contacts provide better peripheral vision than spectacles. Moreover, they do not collect moisture such as condensation, snow, rain or sweat.

Contact lenses are ideal for sports and various outdoor activities. In addition to it there are certain eye conditions like aniseikonia and keratoconus that can be corrected by lenses in a better way than spectacles. The idea of this item was proposed and developed by various famous personalities like Leonardo Da Vinci, Rene Descartes, Thomas Young, Sir John Herschel and Adolf Gaston Eugen Fick. There are other people involved as well, who had developed lenses from one type to another.
There are different types of contact lens available to suit different purposes. Corrective lenses are used to improve vision.

The conditions that can be corrected by lenses normally are myopia, hypermetropia, presbyopia and astigmatism. The general rule applies that you should not use lens while you are sleeping. You can use cosmetic lenses to give a different color to your eyes so that their appearance changes. People with color deficiencies need to wear red-tinted “X-Chrom” lenses.
