Inside the Acupuncture

Today we are acquainted with many methods of alternative medicine.
In fact, there is a rising number of people who prefer alternative medicine over classic one. There is so much we don't know about this methods that, instead, were so common in ancient times.

One of these oldest techniques is the acupuncture.
Acupuncture represents an ancient Chinese medical technique used for curing diseases, pain-relieving and improving health in general.

The basis of this procedure comes from Chinese philosophy's dualistic cosmic theory of the yin and the yang.
This forces of Yin, that represents female principle, which is passive, dark and is represented by the earth, and Yang, that represents male principle, which is active, light and is represented by the heavens, act in human body the same way they do through the universe.

If the person suffers from some kind of disorder the goal is to bring the yin and the yang back in balance, doing so a person is brought back to health.
The imbalance of yin and yang creates the barrier of the vital life force that is called ch'i. This vital force, meaning the energy, flows in our body passing through the 12 meridians associated with 12 main organs: the lung, large intestine, stomach, spleen, heart, small intestine, urinary bladder, kidney, liver, gallbladder, pericardium, and the "triple warmer", which represents the entire torso region.
Using acupuncture we allow yin and yang to flow freely throughout our body.
Looking from another point of view, or better from another Chinese theory, the world and the body are made up of five main elements earth, fire, water, metal and wood.

All elements are connected and they influence each other.
In this case every organ is associated with one of the elements.
In fact, exists an intricate system that shows how organs are related to physical and mental symptoms.

As we can see Chinese medicine views the body as s small part of the universe.
Everything is connected to the laws of the universe and the principles that represent balance.
In the Chinese system is believed that the mental state and the emotions influent the state of the body, generating diseases thanks to the stress, lifestyle and the relationships present in our lives.

How does acupuncture work?

During an acupuncture treatment needles are inserted into various points throughout our body which stimulate nervous system to release certain chemicals that help relieve pain and other disturbances.
Some of the known benefits of acupuncture treatment are the relief of the pain and nausea, the treatment causes no side effects and you may feel relaxed after just the first session.
Japanese acupuncture, that uses very thin needles, and Auricular method one, that uses acupuncture points only on the ear, are the most common in use.

Acupuncture today?

Acupuncture was “discovered” rather late in the US.
In 1971 the New York Times reporter James Reston wrote about this topic. He was amazed how Chinese doctors eased the pain in their patients after the surgery using needles.

Acupuncture today is being practiced all over the world in more than 50 states even though it is not supported, as it should be, by the medical institutions.
But, it is important to say that acupuncture today has been under a great deal of criticism.
One of the relatively recent examples is the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) consensus statement from 1997 that says about the acupuncture:
“Despite considerable efforts to understand the anatomy and physiology of the acupuncture points, the definition and characterization of these points remains controversial. Even more elusive is the basis of some of the key traditional Eastern medical concepts such as the circulation of the Qi, the meridian system, and the five phases theory, which are difficult to reconcile with contemporary biomedical information but continue to play an important role in the evaluation of patients and the formulation of treatment in acupuncture.”

It is not the only example of the criticism that we can come across.
The belief that acupuncture creates only the placebo effect is wide but this does not mean we should condemn it right from the start.
I have seen close friends using acupuncture dealing with all sort of problems and I have to say the results were noticeable.
It is important to have an open mind. The solution will present itself when you least expect it, and maybe the solution can be found in the art of acupuncture.

Acupuncture – good or bad thing?

It seems that acupuncture is getting more and more popular throughout the world.
Even if there still exists criticism about it's effects, it is a growing method of alternative medicine.
The question is: do you believe it will help?
To use an alternative method of medicine you have to open to it.
You need to have a solid confidence in your acupuncturist and just let go.
Believing is everything and you could just turn to the history to see it:

"It is more important to know what sort of person has a disease than to know what sort of disease a person has." -Hippocrates (460-377 B.C.).

So far, could Acupuncture heal from the smoking addiction?
Actually smoking, more than to a physical dependence, is related to a mental one.
So a treatment without any side effects, able to relieve from any sort of stress, I believe, could be really the right answer to help the subject defeat the “reasons” to smoke.
Off course this method, realigning the energy balance in our body, will be also useful to limit and overtake the “soft” withdrawal symptoms of the very first quitting period.
The point is just this:
Acupuncture is an old and actually less known technique, unfortunately a lot of charlatans claim the skills to make use of it.
Actually, acupuncture is a safe treatment when performed by a licensed acupuncturist.
It is required that acupuncturists have a couple of years of training in the field.
So if you decide to use acupuncture just choose your acupuncturist wisely!
