Obviously supplements are not the first thing you should be worrried about packing on a backpacking trip there may be some benefits if you can spare the room in your pack. There are also a few supplements that can benefit any backpacker when they are not on the trail.
Supplements worth putting into your backpack really can only find themselves fitting into two aspects, energy and recovery. As far as energy goes the more sustained the energy is the better because as we know backpacking is about endurance even though steep mountain terrain climbs can feel like a sprint.
For energy there are a few supplements on the market I would recommend worth putting in your bag. The first item is Honey Stinger Energy Gel Packs. They are in convenient little packs easy to stuff into your pack. They provide 29g of carbs which is pretty good considering there size. They have some squish room to so they can be stuffed into the cracks of your bag which is nice. They are great for the morning to get some quick glucose in your system or as a nice snack on the trail if you don't want to slow your pace down, but need a boost. There is another product out too called Carb-Boom . It has a little less carbs in it, but has some caffeine in it which is nice.
For recovery I would recommend a protein powder normally which would help rebuild and replenish your muscle out on the trail. But, when you are backpacking and using the same bottles without really the chance to rinse them out protein can really start to stink. So I would recommend chowing down on some of your beef jerky or your protein bar. But, if you are willing or wanting to try something new I would try a BCAA product right before you start taking protein. BCAAs will help with many different biological process from repairing tissue to energy production. You can take BCAAs in capsule and pill form, but personally I like the powder forms the best. Most of the powders now a days are made in refreshing flavors that don't taste like you are taking a supplement.
