Sustainable interior design has come a long way from its humble beginnings. Scratchy hemp fabrics and boring non-toxic paint colors have since morphed into a sustainably fabulous selection of luxury interior design materials. Beautiful repurposed hardwood floors, elegantly patterned organic cotton upholstery and strikingly modern cabinetry are just some of the eco-luxury appointments used in sustainable interior design. Eco-conscious communities like Costa Rica’s Kalia are now incorporating these high-end interior design materials into their luxury homes to create the ideal home for aesthetically-inclined eco-lovers. Sustainable Interior Design Paints One of the worst indoor air contaminants is also one of the most impactful parts of interior design - wall paint. The paint on a home’s walls sets the tone for everything else to follow, and has the power to transform a blah home into one bursting with life, color and visual appeal. Unfortunately, traditional paints are filled with volatile organic compounds, known in shorthand as VOCs. VOCs release harmful toxins into the air of a home for years after the paint has been applied, and are detrimental to the indoor air quality as well as the occupants’ health. Luckily, luxury housing developments like Kalia who are committed to going green are now using high quality low VOC paints and finishes in their interior design. Kalia’s low and zero VOC paints, for example, are water-based and are formulated without harmful toxins such as formaldehyde, halogenated solvents, mercury, lead, cadmium, chromium VI and aromatic hydrocarbons. Even their choices of elegant wall coverings are made with recycled content and can be recycled in the future, are low in VOCs and still have a high durability and cleanability for a long, attractive life. Sustainable Kitchens & Bathrooms Paint isn’t the only interior design material that has gone green; luxury kitchen and bathroom materials are also now available in sustainable versions. Gorgeous mosaic tile is stylish as ever, but can be purchased from green-minded sources who adhere to high standards of sustainability. Kalia’s stylish tiling, for example, comes from a company that reuses rain water as well as the water they use, repurposes broken tile instead of throwing it away, recuperates the land that the tile material is extracted from, and leads several programs that promote education about sustainability and the environment. Quartz countertops are also both stylish and sustainable, especially when sourced from an eco-conscious manufacturer. Kalia’s quartz countertops are manufactured by a company that employs eco-friendly production by using 60% recycled content. Since the quartz countertops in kitchens and bathrooms are also nonporous, mold and microbe growth is inhibited and less cleaning and maintenance is required, which reduces the amount of harmful detergents necessary in household cleaning. Sustainable Furniture & Fabrics Beautiful luxury homes can also be appointed with eco-friendly furnishings and fabrics for a complete look of sustainable sophistication. Sustainable furniture is crafted with reclaimed wood to preserve the earth’s precious forests without compromising the furniture’s quality construction. Stylishly designed upholstery and carpets have also gone green thanks to modern weaving technology that turns biodegradable, non-toxic hemp, flax and jute into a soft, luxurious fabrics. Recycled polyester is another great eco-friendly material used in communities like Kalia . With water based finishes and environmentally friendly dyes, these fabrics are as good for the residents as they look in their home.
