There is no such thing as a hidden job market, it’s all out there for anyone to find. Unfortunately, many people don’t apply themselves and really look beyond the traditional job search channels. An employment search should not simply be about applying to adverts; it’s an opportunity for progressing along a career plan.

But how do you turn your employment search into career advancement?

First, decide on the goals of your employment search: draw a definite picture in your mind of where you want your career to go, which industry or field interests you and what kind of company you want to work for. Research potential companies that match your employment search criteria: explore their website, investigate their corporate culture, vision and mission statement, and see if they can offer growth potential. Many corporate websites will have a link to job opportunities or their partner recruitment agency.

If the company offers a link for employment search look to see if there is anything that interests you and meets with your employment search criteria. Also check to see if the company will accept open applications; if not, follow through and send in an open application, but be sure to follow up with a phone call or email.

This method may take longer than a standard employment search in local publications or online job sites, but it will ensure that your employment search targets potential or future opportunities that will help you advance your career. Using this employment search method hand in hand with more traditional methods will see your employment search casting a wider net, covering as many of the opportunities and possibilities available to you.

In addition to this employment search consider making use of a recruitment agency as they often have many positions lined up and are themselves searching for candidates. Indeed a lifetime relationship with a recruitment consultant can bring much joy to your employment search efforts throughout your career. Another method to conduct your employment search is through online candidate and employment search websites. These are dual purposed and allow you to submit your CV for potential employers to browse as well as allowing you to search available vacancies.
