A person no longer has to carry cash on them to be able to purchase a pack of cigarettes. Compatible Machines

A taspo card can be issued to a person who is twenty years of age or older. They can only be used in cigarette vending machines that are IC card compatible. Japan tries to ensure that information on these taspo smart cards will not be misused by using networking between all Smart card compatible machines. Networking between machines makes using the Taspo card safer. It is this networking that also provides the capability of using money from the Taspo card to pay for a person's cigarettes.

Applying and Using a Card

Obtaining and using a Taspo smart card is not a complicated process. First, a person needs to fill out an application with all of the necessary information. Secondly, they need to attach a recent photo of themselves to the application. Lastly, a person is required to affix personal identification to their application form.

Once the card is approved and received by a person, they can use their card in two ways to purchase their cigarettes from a vending machine. They will be able to pay by using cash and verifying their age with their Taspo smart card or they can pay using Pidel on their card and verify their age by using the Taspo card. Both ways are very convenient.
