Six Sigma – here is an overview of six sigma benefits and uses, also includes the information about how organizations uses six sigma to increase their productivity and minimize the production cost

Six Sigma is a management technique that aims to develop and provide products and services close to perfection. The bias that Six Sigma is only useful for problems that are "hard to find but easy to fix" has often been argued, as opposed to the radical approach to restructuring (reengineering), whose supporters are focused on problems that are "easy to find, but difficult to correct."

The term “Six Sigma "refers to statistical constructs that measure how far a given process deviates from perfection. Six Sigma is a process of discipline as well as the number of defects existing in a business process, and then determine how to systematically remove them. Six Sigma can be used for a broad range of business process improvement and applied to many types of processes including the nature of measured attributes may vary considerably.

Quality principles applied in the implementation of Six Sigma are almost always defined in terms of corporate vision and strategy. Processes are developed from the perspective of the client and activated by an organizational commitment to reason in terms of process. Getting a six sigma training make an employee perfect for handling and improving the operations which includes productivity issues, product cost issues, customer satisfaction and the product defects issues.

The demands of performance, reliability, price, timeliness of delivery, service and precision define the objectives. Customer orientation introduces market knowledge, which in turn may shed light on the need for process change in areas where the company can add value or implement improvements requested by customers themselves.

Proponents of Six Sigma on the assumption that customers are interested in comparing, not the average performance of companies, but the relative performance of the processes used to supply goods or services.

Rigorous methodology, Six Sigma requires that processes which do not produce more than 3.4 defects per million occurrences of that, although its main objective is continuous improvement. In fact very few organizations can claim to have ever achieved the Six Sigma of 3.4 defects per million.

The principles of Six Sigma apply not only to industry but also to the provision of services.

Six Sigma is based on a few key concepts:

• Key success factors (Critical to quality): Attributes with the most customer value.
• Defect (Defect): Failure to File.
• Process capability (process capability) that a process can provide.
• Variation (Variation): What the customer sees and feels.
• Stability Operations (Stable operations): Ensuring consistent, predictable processes to improve the perception and feel of the customer.

Six Sigma was originally developed by Motorola in 1986 and now it is one of the widely used business strategies for improving the customer satisfaction, removing errors, defects in manufacturing and other business processes.

Six Sigma Project Methodologies
Six sigma projects follow two methodologies in order to increase the productivity and minimizing the defects along with the cost.

1. DMAIC – DMAIC six sigma is used for improving the existing business processes.
2. DMADV or DFSS – Used for creating new products or business processes designs.

Both DMAIC and DMADV or DFSS modules uses 5 phases for successful execution.
