Are you ready for 2010 FIFA World Cup? Whether or not you are a soccer/football fan, the FIFA World Cup is a global phenomenon that no one will want to miss. Millions and millions of people tune in to each tournament to root on their country for national pride.
Many companies have taken notice to the popularity of this event and they all want to take full advantage of its marketing capabilities.Tom Marchesello the CEO of Nine Multimedia agrees with MobiThinking when they say that “The importance of mobile to football fans couldn’t be better illustrated than by South Africa’s biggest selling men’s magazine Soccer-Laduma, where the mobile site – Soccerladuma.mobi – is much bigger than the Website and is growing rapidly.” Football and soccer fans do not have computers and television sets around where they work, but they want to watch the game, where do they turn to? Their phones. Fans want the games to be streamed smoothly and there are companies out there that can do that, like Nine Mobile. With the growing importance of mobile devices, the best way to benefit from the event is to launch a mobile marketing campaign.
The mobile ad network InMobi is now the largest mobile advertiser in South America with 650 million mobile ad requests per month. Besides the Super Bowl, the World Cup could be the second greatest marketing platform. Some of the companies that have started campaigning with the 2010 FIFA World Cup are ESPN, BBC, Adidas, Sony Ericsson, and others. They have all launched their own specific campaign. ESPN and BBC are both headed in the same direction, which is to create apps that make it possible to view the games and also, it allows them to advertise with it. Another way companies are marketing themselves is by creating promotion related to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Some companies are giving away tickets, while others are giving away supplies for a World Cup party. As for mobile providers, they are also looking to capitalize from the tournament. Providers, Orange, Nokia, Vodafone, and T-Mobile, have been awarded internet rights for the World Cup and all have the potential for launching their own mobile campaigns. Being the international experience that it is, this is also a great way for companies to market themselves to all different sorts of groups.
The prospective mobile marketing opportunities for the 2010 FIFA World Cup are so large that MobiThinking even has guidelines as how to market through mobile devices.
1. Fans are always on the go and want the information immediately, so go mobile.
2. Fans want to watch the game and do not want to be attacked by ads, so only market to those that opt-in, do not be intrusive.
3. Fans want to be kept up to date, so send alerts and be useful.
4. The information is made readily free by many sources (ESPN, Yahoo, CBS, and others), so do not charge the fans.
5. Fans are always together in large bunches, so make it easy for them to interact with Bluetooth.
6. There are a million of people watching, use this to your advantage, and interact with the fans, giving them a call to act.
7. In the spirit of competition, get the fans to interact even more by having them competing against one another through you holding a contest.
8. Fans need supplies for the games, so team up with other companies to push your brand.
9. There are many other companies out there competing for the fans attention, you can one up them by giving away items because it is every fans dream to have a piece of the World Cup with them.
10. As with any sporting event, it has many branches, so climb onto one, like a fantasy league or something similar.
11. Lastly, people really want their updates on the match, use Twitter.
The 2010 FIFA World Cup can be the start of a mobile marketing boom!
