Hiking along mountain trails as a recreational activity or form of exercise is fairly common, especially among outdoor enthusiasts. Because of this, a plethora of hiking equipment has flooded the market, like specially-designed backpacks, heavy-duty shoes and boots, and navigation tools. Surprisingly enough, the popularity of hiking has also given rise to the development and manufacture of walking sticks.
Walking sticks, otherwise known as hiking sticks or trekking poles, are becoming common hiking accessories that are used to assist hikers with their hiking rhythm and also to provide support and stability on uneven terrain. There are a number of hikers in other countries, most especially Europe, who use their ski poles for hiking. This greatly discouraged, as ski poles were made for snow and not for mountainous landscapes, so they provide considerably less support.
Hiking sticks, as opposed to ski poles, are also better options in terms of portability. Most hiking sticks are collapsible, capable of being broken down into two or more sections to facilitate easy storage in a hiker’s backpack when not in use. Some sticks can also be expanded or retracted as necessary, although non-folding walking sticks have been proven to be more durable and provide better stability.
Most hiking sticks are made of lightweight material, like carbon fiber or aluminum, making them easy to carry around even for long-distance hikes. However, there are also plenty of walking sticks made from natural materials, like wood. Some are even equipped with extra features, like adjustable wrist straps, grips, and camera mounts.
Hiking sticks are extremely helpful, as they help keep a hiker’s balance especially when the trail is uneven or slippery. It’s useful for crossing bodies of water and traversing steep mountain ledges, and also keeps hikers safe from falling. Aside from added safety, walking sticks reduce the shock and impact that otherwise the back, legs, knees and feet absorb, especially when going downhill.
Some hikers scoff at the idea of using hiking sticks, claiming that they make hiking less challenging. Although they may have a point, the use of walking sticks for hiking provides more benefits than disadvantages. In the end, choosing to use a walking stick really depends on each hiker’s personal preference and level of hiking experience.
