The mere mention of the word “quad-core” can trigger a drool response from performance enthusiasts. The 2.0-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Q9000 has already made its way into HP PB994 Battery gaming laptops like the Toshiba X305-Q725 and the Acer Aspire AS8930-7665 (stay tuned for our review). Video-encoding tests indicated that the quad-core processor was more than 20 percent faster than the dual-core ones found in the M1 and the M17.
Samsung has found its calling in netbooks. The company has realized that good keyboards are lacking in this category, so it outfits every one of its netbooks HP HSTNN-IB08 Battery with keyboards that are larger than those of its rivals. The N120 is particularly special in that it’s the only 10-inch netbook that incorporates a full-size keyboard.
So how did the Neo processor fare against the Atom in actual testing? Thanks to the Neo, the dv2 showed its muscle HP HSTNN-IB05 Battery in video-encoding tests, outperforming the Atom-powered ASUS EeePC 1000HE by 20 seconds and the Mini 12 by 1 minute 18 seconds.
The X460 has a considerable advantage over the Fujitsu S6520 and the Panasonic CF-Y7 in the graphics department with its HP Pavilion DV2000 Battery integrated Nvidia GeForce 9200M GS chipset, whereas the other two run an Intel integrated chipset.
By going to a single-core Atom processor, the 1201PN is more energy efficient than its dual-core predecessor, despite using a smaller 441462-251. According to MobileMark 2007 tests, the 1201PN scored 5 hours 10 minutes, outlasting the Asus 1201N (4:20) and Lenovo S12 (4:06).
ASUS clearly favored the processor over the graphics card in the G71G-Q1, given that the same Nvidia GeForce 9800M GS can be found in a much cheaper 436281-141 system, the $1,100 MSI GT627-218US. And it’s the graphics card that determines how well a system runs a 3D-intensive game.
Alienware and CyberPower took the opposite approach with the M17 and the M1: They scaled down to a midrange processor and allocated the HP Compaq N600 battery resources saved into dual ATI Radeon HD 3870 graphics cards (in a CrossFire configuration), which, in each case, delivered higher 3DMark06 scores than the G71G-Q1 could manage. At low resolutions, the G71G-Q1’s quad-core processor played a big role in defeating its adversaries in World in Conflict and Crysis tests.
In terms of raw horsepower, the Neo clearly has an advantage over Atom. Against an ultra-low-voltage Intel Core 2 Duo, however, it fell way behind.
